The AquaClear filter is the best on the market, but the accessories are a bit expensive. the rest on the market. You want to change your sponge every 2 months, but that will kill the good bacteria. I kept mine for about 1 year before it became too gross to use. You can clean it, but ONLY by rinsing with water from the tank. When I change the water, I rinse the sponge in one of the last buckets of water—about once a month. I also cut off pieces to run a new tank without having to cycle it - works great. The only thing that worries me is the cost of sponges and other accessories. There are some (probably Chinese) sponges that will fit just as well and work for a lot less money if you can find them. I'm looking after a child and she found them and the next thing I know she's made sofas and beds for barbies out of my chinese sponges. The price of AquaClears accessories has come down significantly since the price of the filter went up LOL - you can't win.
