Not ready for prime time

When I saw this DVD burner for sale I was amazed that prices fell so quickly but after 30 days of ownership my only regret is that it wasn't less impulsive. Everything went well at first, the recording quality on HQ, SP and even EP is not bad. I've noticed a number of artifacts with fast screen transitions or time-lapses, but compared to VHS recordings, the colors are much richer, the edges are sharper, and one of the most pleasant surprises is the ability to skip ahead at different speeds to skip through commercials. How could I refuse? Cons: 1) Disc errors on DVD+RW media can render recordings and entire discs unusable (occurs in 5% of cases) 2) Boot time is an agonizing 30-60 seconds (disc replacements can take over a minute) 3) You can only record 3 hours 50 minutes on a 4 hour disc, 1 hour 55 minutes on a 2 hour disc, etc. It doesn't seem to mean much until you're done recording 1 hour programs start and up to half of every DVD is wasted! 4) Menus are slow and difficult to navigate. 5) DVD+R/W media will only play DVDs manufactured within the last 1-2 years. 6) Hard disks do not rotate when idle and the recorder becomes very hot. 7) The interface for playing MP3 and JPEG is terrible. But judge for yourself; Try it in store. It does everything it says on the tin, but given the issues above, I just can't recommend it. If you are considering buying a DVD recorder, I would wait 6 months for the next generation of recorders in this price range.
