Review on Tetra ReptoFilter: Clear-Water Filter for Terrariums - Optimal Filtration Solution by Kayla Johnson

We have fiddler crabs in a 10 gallon tank. About half of the reservoir is covered with water about three centimeters deep, the other half is a sandy beach. We changed two ReptoFilters within six months. The first filter struggled to pick up water, although we keep the water level at or above the level of the water inlets. If the filter was disconnected while cleaning the tank, once reconnected it will not draw water until we pour at least an additional gallon of water directly into the filter compartment. The amount of water required to operate the filter can erode our crab's shoreline. Eventually the motor stopped working so I gave it up and ordered a new filter. Our second filter was delivered on December 22nd. On January 7, he stopped working altogether. It does not absorb water and the engine does not run. There is enough water in the aquarium and there is no apparent reason why the filter stopped working after two weeks. Our fiddler just finished skinning and is tired of us fiddling with his habitat trying to get his filter to do its job. This terrarium filter may not be designed for shallow water, but that doesn't matter. It's rubbish and I won't buy it again. ***Update*** After reading other negative reviews of this filter I followed the manufacturer's advice to carefully disassemble the unit and flush the dirt around the impeller. I disassembled and cleaned the block. It wasn't a difficult task. Once assembled I stuck the filter into the wall and lo and behold it immediately sucked in water and started filtering. There was very little sand in the impeller area, but cleaning was very important. I'll try lowering the water level in the tank to see how the device works. Our violinist doesn't like high water levels, and my evaluation of the product is based in part on whether it helps me keep my animals healthy and happy. Time will tell how well this filter will work, but at least now I know how to take care of it. Upgraded to four stars because the manufacturer should provide clear and obvious maintenance and cleaning instructions in the user manual.
