Must be turned on every time unless connected to an always-on (battery) accessory port.
The only real problem I've found is that by default the device is off when you're connected to the accessory port which only gets power when the car is on. You must install this device in a location where you can easily reach the power button on the back to turn it on. It seems to charge well. Good compact size. Cable length is ok, not very long.
