Review on ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Finnex Hang-On Electronic Controller Titanium Tube Aquarium Heater: Advanced Temperature Control Innovation by Robin Williams

Revainrating 3 out of 5

A good heater, but expensive and short-lived.

I would like to rate this heater higher but for some reason I can't. I've bought several of these, mostly 100 watts. They have some really nice features. I like the controls outside of the tank (who doesn't) and while "shatterproof" glass heaters are fine, for a turtle or a big fish the heater really needs to be shatterproof. This heater is abused a lot. No matter how hard it's scratched or kicked, it won't break, break (thanks to the rubber tips) or lose tune. It gets very hot (yup) and for reptiles or amphibians and even some fish it needs to be enclosed in some kind of protective net/cage. I use plastic mesh tubing from Magnum micron filters that fit together nicely. However, the disadvantages of this heater are quite serious. Given the disadvantages, it is relatively expensive. Others don't like the short warranty period either, but I didn't even notice it. If something breaks before I believe it, I have to throw it away and buy a different brand. Complete laziness or unwillingness to take a steam bath with trifles - call it what you will. In any case, if it is important to you, it is of course only a few months and, as with most guarantees, you still have to pay something. Individual reliability and overall service life are low. If you receive one that doesn't seem to be working properly, I would advise you to return it immediately. When these guys work, they work great. They may not correspond to the exact temperature on the dial, but it should be close and it should hold it very well. before it crashes. These heaters should not be used individually, no heater should do. For example, if you need a 200 watt heater for a 40 gallon tank, buy two 100 watt heaters and put one on each end. Neither of them alone is powerful enough to cook fish if it fails and stays on, and/or a heater will still work to keep the aquarium warm if one of them fails. At least two heaters per tank is the absolute rule, which I learned the hard way a long time ago. I do not recommend this heater if price or durability is important to you. For most of my aquariums I use fairly inexpensive glass heaters, two or three per tank - they last as well as any expensive brands I've had. They're more than cheap enough to keep on hand for emergencies, and two cheap heaters are always safer than one at any cost.
