Fresh out of the box they had a very strong bamboo smell (not surprising given it's made from bamboo). After thoroughly washing and drying the boards and rubbing them with a paper towel, I found a decent amount of small chips and the boards weren't as smooth and finished as I'd like. So I gave them a good sanding with fine sandpaper. After another wash and thorough drying, I treated it with a meat block conditioner. The strong odor was mostly gone and I started using the boards after two weeks of use. I noticed a few small chips on the board I used the most and resanded it and reapplied the cutting board conditioner. Since then they have been great, I apply conditioner when it starts to look dry and am very happy with these boards.
