Performs as expected

I bought this drive with the intention of backing up all my photo data once a week. What particularly attracted me to this drive were two things: 1) It used a USB3 Type-B connector, which is much stronger than the thin USB3 connectors (USB3 Micro-B) found on other mainstream external hard drives like WD and Seagate.2) The presence of a power button. I can't overstate my anger at the latest external hard drives that don't have a power button. I like to keep my external hard drives plugged in all the time, but I don't want to go back there every time to unplug them and plug them into my computer. In addition to the above, I use another Fantom. drive (3TB) for a couple of years (including backup) and it has been working fine so far. The first thing I did when I got it was put it through a series of SMART tests, which all came back green, so cheers. The second test was a full area scan that looks at all sectors and sees if any of them are corrupt. After 9 hours and 45 minutes (would be closer to 6.5 hours if I wasn't running some other CPU intensive programs), 0 bad sectors were found. Hooray again! I decided to also check the results of the HDDScan surface test (which also shows the response time distribution of all sectors) and everything looked great. When checking the drive properties, the drive you are using TOSHIBA MD04ACA400 4TB 7200rpm 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive seems empty. Both HDDScan and Toshiba's hard drive list (on Revain) report that the hard drive is running at 7200 rpm. That gave me extra confidence. The drive I received had a slightly different design on the back, with power and USB ports above the power button, making it a bit difficult to turn on when the drive was on its side. The drive came preformatted to NTFS and there was only a text document on it (explaining what NTFS is and what to do if you have a Mac.) No other malware, test backup software etc etc. The aluminum case is real nice, just like my previous fantom drive. The drive got a little warm when starting a surface scan, so I ran a fan to keep it cool (which was very effective at the lowest settings). The drive also came with a kickstand, which was nice. There is a blue LED on the front that flashes when accessed.

Pros
  • External hard drives
Cons
  • No performance
