Once a sponge is dirty it's not difficult to clean, but it takes a lot of rinsing and squeezing to completely remove the dirt. How often you need to clean it depends on the conditions of your aquarium. The reason for the 3 stars is the build quality. The plastic feels heavy and looks thick, but it breaks very easily. Be sure to do a few test fittings before firmly attaching the elbows and adapters. Removing or adjusting the orientation of the filter takes a lot of pressure, and I broke the extension tube, adapter, one of the elbows, and the plastic filter grids that the sponge extends beyond. Ultimately, instead of such a pre-filter on my AC70, I will either buy a powerhead and attach this pre-filter, or better yet, an angled sponge filter, or just use an air filter. drove a corner sponge filter in addition to my AC70.
