Bought this mortar and pestle to crush our elderly dad's pills to mix with applesauce twice a day. (He has trouble swallowing.) My wife also enjoys grinding herbs and measuring out 1-cup portions. QUALITY/FUNCTIONALITY We were surprised by the high quality and excellent workmanship. The beautiful surface is smooth, without unhygienic grooves or milling marks. This mortar and pestle exudes class, even as it grinds the toughest tablets down to a fine dust in seconds, then cleans easily. This item is RELIABLE. It feels like it's carved from a single piece of thin steel. And HEAVY - like an ordinary brick! Precisely designed to last a lifetime. Thick rubber pad on the bottom prevents slipping. No more trying to stay in place while hacking. SIZE just right. The mortar (bowl) looks like a short, sturdy goblet and holds exactly one cup (8 fl oz).
