I have bought both 4T and 5 of this suit. They were for a 3 year old, tall and stocky, and a 5 year old, tall and lean. I ordered a 4T for my 3 year old which is usually good for gymnastics and children's place 3T with no room to grow. . My reason for this is that we usually can't zip up 3T pants that are even a tad tight, and I've read that they come with an adjustable waist. 4T was perfect. The pants were about an inch too long, which was easily corrected by buttoning the hem once and putting on the new invisible hem. Now he can wear them for about a year. The waist is not thin at all but adjustable. I was able to easily tighten it for him and it fit like a glove. The jacket was slightly longer in the arms but they only covered the wrist so it was about 1cm longer. By that estimate the 3T would fit him just like the regular Gymboree 3T. I ordered 5 for my 5 year old even though he is tall. It's slim enough that the adjustable waist sometimes doesn't go down far enough to stay upright. Pants are a size 5. They were right at his ankles when his waist was perfectly positioned. The pants are very low on him due to the thin waist and the length looked perfect as it reached the soles of his shoes. I will remove the 1 inch hem a bit to extend the life of the suit for him. In general, a size 5 will fit the same as a size 5 from a larger brand. It's not a narrow 5, it's a fairly wide size 5. Personally, I'm glad I didn't go for a size 6, although the length would be better because it would be quite wide and difficult to hold (size 5 was already hard enough) . For that the quality of the suit is very good with some small flaws, size 4T had a button that was not centered on the pants, the closure worked fine inside but there was a small blister because the button or buttonhole was placed wrong . It's unnoticeable and the button can be easily rearranged to fix it. Otherwise the lining is impeccable, the quality of the fabric is better than expected. The presentation of the costume made me think of a real adult costume. In contrast, when I found the awful $50 Macy's and JCP costumes that were stretchy and skinny like Halloween costumes, it was absolutely amazing. I would rate the quality lower than Janie and Jack for a special occasion but that's about it. And a comparable suit in this store would cost around $180, so I think the slight decrease in workmanship here is quite appropriate. In summary, the workmanship of these suits is good, although flaws are common. The quality of the materials is fantastic. The quality for the price is just amazing. The fit is comparable to other brands and tends towards the larger side, although it's definitely wider than many standard brands. Minor adjustments for a perfect fit are easy - the 1 inch hem allows for slightly longer pants at home and the built in adjustable waist fits all but the skinny kids. I highly recommend this purchase.
