I was given a smoking copy. I tried to use the cooler from my previous Phenom II X4 925, but it is ineffective against the new CPU. Under load, it quickly climbs to 65 degrees, at which point the overheating protection kicks in and the BIOS lowers the voltage on the core, slowing its operation frequency. At idle, it sits between 42 and 45 degrees. I originally suspected the motherboard, so I downloaded the most recent BIOS from the manufacturer's website. I started up LinX-0.6.5, and AIDA64 5.80 reports a temperature of 67 degrees by the third run. When I suspected that the sensor could be faulty, I reached out to feel the radiator and accidentally touched the heat pipe, nearly setting myself on fire like a soldering iron. Both processors offer comparable performance, however the older Phenom uses a 45 nm fabrication technology and dissipates 125 watts. The new X4 840 uses a 28 nm technology and 65 watts of power during production, but it actually generates more heat. The results of the CPU-Z test CPUID Benchmark 15,01,64 (Win 10x64) are as follows: 1 core 1068 points, 4 cores 3955 points (these numbers will be halved in the 32-bit version of Windows). In the benchmark, a total of 4 cores gain just 3480 if the AMD Turbo Core 3.0 feature is disabled in the BIOS.
