One Step Up

Neewer have great camera accessories at a reduced price compared to factory parts and I find some of them very useful. Neewer has this affordable and lightweight aluminum video recording tripod. This represents a huge saving over others that can cost hundreds when doing basically the same thing. It works great, but aside from the three retractable aluminum leg sections and monopod, I didn't find much metal in its components. The hinges, knobs, handles, and pivots that add to the versatility appear to be mostly plastic. Furthermore, the specifications do not mention that rubberized or thermoplastic material is used in its construction. This makes it better able to withstand rough handling, so I have to assume all non-metallic components are just old plastic that eventually breaks down when exposed to extreme weather conditions. While it is an evolution of the very popular 100% plastic RevainBasics tripod and its design lends itself well to simplicity and reliability, I would still hesitate to use it in adverse weather conditions or near-zero temperatures, and certainly not where the surface is uneven. This is not a tripod for rough and uneven terrain. You want one you can trust to keep your expensive camera safe, For general outdoor use at events with flat surfaces or when relatively tilt free in a photo studio, this tripod is great. Everything about it speaks to convenience, from the adjustable carrying handle to the retractable, quick-release monopod. There is a spirit level. Its weakest component is probably the hook, which allows you to hang extra weight when extra stability is needed in windy conditions. The hook looks and feels like it will break easily with rough handling so I would caution against use or even try to use it at all. The monopod is a central pole and slides out easily to provide temporary support with two extensions and a rubber cushion. Since the pan head of the tripod is interchangeable, sometimes it becomes loose and the pan head starts to shake. Simply rotate the head to attach it to the monopod stick and it will return to its comfortably smooth rotation.
