The locking ring rotates smoothly and snaps securely, and both ends are precision machined aluminum with a 3/8" threaded socket at the base and a 1/4" stud at the top. Both platforms are extremely smooth and well anodized, while the carbon fiber tubes are evenly woven, smooth and free of bumps. The quality is top notch and in my case it matches the weave and finish of my travel tripod perfectly. I bought it not to elevate my tripod but to create a monopod. My tripod has a detachable leg and together with the center column it becomes a monopod after the two parts are put together. To remove the center column from the tripod you need to remove the spring hook from its base, a part I fear losing on set. So I bought this and a lightweight ball head, I only needed one leg from my tripod to build the monopod and I made the transition from one to the other quicker and without the risk of losing a key component. bought an aluminum monopod, but I was never known for my intelligence. creative, yes, but not clever.
