Review on Enhance Your Hunting Experience with Steiner Predator Series Hunting Binoculars by Benjamin Robinson

Great but might take some getting used to if you're used to roof prisms

If you're used to roof prisms and/or center focus wheels they will take some getting used to. First, the autofocus works exactly as described. Adjust the diopter once (if necessary from the default settings) and then let your eyes focus on the subject while you look around. That was the part I had to get used to. Instinct is to grab focus when changing range. With Steiner AF, you just have to wait a bit for your eyes to get used to it. Unfamiliar at first, but quickly got used to it. The CAT coating (with its ridiculous looking '90s logo on the side) seems to work well, despite a slight pink tint in bright light. I have VERY good depth perception and looking into the darker parts of the forest was easy and seemed as bright as my naked eye. Secondly; If you're only familiar with rooftop prism binoculars (or haven't used Porro in a while), you'll find that there are a few trade-offs. Porro is an older style but produces sharper images with a wider field of view (because light passes through fewer prisms) BUT they are physically larger. This 8x30 is as big (but much lighter) as my Leupold 10x40 roof prisms (when perpendicular to each other). In terms of open-frame comfort, they carry like a set of roof prisms. The eyecups are a good size (at least for me). The hinge has many adjustments for different faces. I can hold them long enough with one or two hands. Overall, this is a solid German-made optic at a reasonable price.
