Review on Fjallraven Greenland Wax 100g: The Ultimate Protective Solution for Outdoor Gear by Barbara Simmons

Revainrating 4 out of 5

It works, with some work

I've used Barbour Thornproof wax on several Barbour jackets and hats over the years so I'm familiar with the clothing waxing process. Fjällräven wax is a little different, it gets a lot harder and harder. Application requires some grease, the recommended technique is to rub a piece of wax (about the size of a bar of soap) vigorously into the garment to be treated, then heat the garment to melt the wax and soak it into the fabric allow . the clothing. Living in a cool, dry climate is not easy as the dry conditions make the wax block even tougher. Next time I might try to heat the wax a bit first (don't melt it, just warm it) which might make it easier to apply. I've used a blow dryer to melt Barbour wax onto clothes with great success, but blow drying took forever and had mixed results with Fjällräven wax. It may be easier in warmer, wetter climates. I bought a cheap heat gun to use next time as the hair dryer doesn't get hot enough to melt the wax well. However, I have to be careful not to burn my pants. There is a fine line between sufficient heat and ignition. Since I didn't have enough hair dryers, the wax left streaks. I hope to fix it with a hair dryer. In short, the product works and leaves a nicer matte finish than the somewhat glossy finish left by Barbour's dressing. However, it is boring, nothing else. It takes about 45 minutes to sew a pair of pants. This is the price paid for traditional waxed cotton clothing. I wouldn't bother if I wasn't using this garment for some serious outdoor wear. Waxing makes clothing waterproof, and waxing helps treated garments wear better and last longer, particularly through careful finishing of the seams. I don't do it for beauty as it doesn't improve the look. This improves the properties of the article. A large stick of Fjällräven wax is good for several garments. I found it to be virtually odorless, much nicer than Barbour wax. I would rate it 3 stars because it's cumbersome to use and 4.5 stars because it's inexpensive and works.

Pros
  • good thing
Cons
  • I don't remember but there was something
