This gravel averaged 1/3 to 1/5 green pea size. I would say it's a mix of regular gravel and fish storage sand. When wet it is a very dark brown color. For the most part it's round and smooth, like a river rock, so it doesn't hurt my bottom feeders. And hallelujah, it required minimal cleaning. I rinsed it in a bucket of water and only watered 3 times and the water ran clear. I wanted a dark, smooth, fine gravel that I can scratch, so it's perfect for my needs. I'm just setting up my second tank with this so haven't used the gravel cleaner yet, but it seems heavy enough to handle the gravel cleaner's hose suction. I'll update here if not. The 11 pound bag covered 2 inches at the bottom of my 5 gram Fluval spec. It's so great to order online when it turns out to be the product it says it is. Just so you know, I don't give 5 star ratings unless it's a really great product. A bit pricey but worth it for my little fish.
