Buy LR44 batteries with these
Both thermometers work as expected but this happened after I replaced them since they contained batteries (fortunately I had LR44 batteries available). I'm a little disappointed that there was no insulating strip to keep the batteries fresh. If you don't have them, I'd recommend keeping LR44 batteries on hand if you want to use them right away.
