I use this to prevent my child from throwing toys or objects into a gapped rail. It is ideal to lay the mesh material and align it with the stair railing as well as the hallway railing. The only thing I would say is that it was a bit heavy as my rail was bigger than the zip ties that came with it. I had to double the tie rod to fit the larger rods. I would also say the material is light and a bit flimsy than I wanted, but does the job of keeping things from falling.
