Review on πŸ”Œ Enhanced Cable Drive Adapter Converter Support for Optimal Performance by James Cypert

Power supply unit possibly insufficient

I got it in the mail today and tested it quickly. I have 3 WD Yellow 2TB drives and WD Black 1TB drives. I wanted to reuse them with an old laptop for a project so I checked if this USB interface would help. The first drive I plugged in was one of the 2TB drives. I heard the drive spinning and then it kept making a "click-click-click" sound and when I plugged it into the USB port the computer didn't see anything. I tried all the yellow 2TB drives and they all did the same thing. I finally tried the 1TB drive and it worked and Windows saw it right away. So. At least I knew the interface worked (it might not work with 2TB drives). But I decided to do a little more research to find out what the problem is. Problem with 12V DC adapter power that comes with the device. 12VDC is required for 3.5" HDDs when connected as they require 12V while 2.5" and SSDs do not. I have several extra 12V DC adapters and they all have the same standard connector so I grabbed one and tried it out. Bingo. all 3 2 TB disks worked and were recognized by Windows without problems. I checked a bit and tested both adapters with a 12VDC multimeter under load. My 12V DC adapter when connected to the drive: DC 12.28V DC. Powered by 12 VDC, supplied with unit: 11.73 VDC, varying +/- 0.05 VDC. This tells me that the included 12V DC adapter is not regulated very well and probably has poor output filtering. It is actually rated for 2A while my adapter is only rated for 1.5A but my 12V was stable. Apparently these drives are pretty picky about the 12V supply and won't handle anything below 12V. At least now I know what the problem is. is. I'm planning on getting 1 or 2 more of these (maybe a different brand, not sure) because at least I know they do what I need. So. If you get one and it behaves like your drive just won't spin up and your computer can't see the drive, you can probably try a different adapter if you have one and it should work fine.
