Electronic Sensor Bilge Pumps

The automatic pump circuit failed for 6 weeks leaving only the auxiliary pump running on my moored boat. Contrary to what some write, this pump does not have an internal float. In "Automatic" mode, the pump turns on about every three minutes and checks the power consumption of the pump motor. A pump impeller rotating in water draws more current than an impeller in air. Then it runs for the specified time. If the bilge is pumped empty, the pump continues to run for a certain time. This wastes good battery power. In theory, these pumps should be decent. In practice, they are rubbish! It is much better to buy a "cage" or protected float and install it with a higher quality pump. This is the second pump I have installed in three months and both failed quickly. There are many "bad" reviews about this particular pump and others that perform the same. The other pump that failed was the $89 Rule pump. I'm an electrical engineer and don't really have a problem installing or understanding these things. Obviously, the circuit is not very reliable, and therefore it can fail. It's really not worth losing your boat. I DO NOT RECOMMEND this pump or any other that works on the same principle. A simple float switch and pump are far superior to an electronic sensor. They only turn on when there is water in your bilge and the heavy duty switch or pump motor are your only sources of pump failure.
