We bought a new mattress last year. We have never paid that much for a mattress, but we felt it was worth it. Of course we wanted to protect our investment. We did A LOT of research, spent hours reading customer reviews and online lists of the "best mattress pads". We were drawn to Tencel because it's natural, soft, waterproof and dust mites hate it! The price was a bit high but the mattress it covers costs a lot more so we didn't want to skimp. I wash it about every 4 months on the gentle cycle and dry on the lightest setting. Holds up very well with no problems. It was recently put to the test. There was an incident involving blood that wasn't noticed until the morning. Saturation was intense for the top sheet and mattress pad. After a quick internet search for the treatment, we sprayed him with hydrogen peroxide. After 15 minutes not much happened. The next suggestion from the internet was white vinegar. With a rag and lots of vinegar we removed the stain on the bed sheet and mattress topper. Remember both were still on the bed as we had to work and there was no time. We left it like that, hoping the vinegar would stop it from setting, until we came back. That night we stripped the bed and washed the sheets and pad. We discovered the condition of the mattress. Here it is in its original form! It doesn't even smell faintly of vinegar! The purchase is worthwhile. There is now a weak spot on the tread but we didn't use bleach or anything in the wash to avoid ruining it. The stain is light and invisible even through the white sheets. If we could have washed it when it was discovered, we think the result could have been different.
