Just did my teenage son's ears because he didn't want to spend the money at Claire's and he knew I'd done mine with needles and ice cubes when I was a teen. I figured this was a little more sterile than that. We used a sharpie and then went NEXT to that mark (not through it because I didn't think that was a good idea). It's simple to use, just line it up and pinch together with a little bit of force. I tested the first one by giving a tiny little push to loosen it up and it worked like a charm when I actually pushed through his ear. I forgot to do that with the second one and it required more force to start so he flinched. It moved a tiny bit and wasn't exactly where I wanted it, but by then I was committed. He might have really thin earlobes because it didn't look like the earrings were completely tight against his ear (it was sticking out the front a bit at first). I pushed it back with my fingers without closing it any tighter and it looks fine).
