Works well. Adjust with a slight twist to achieve a fine or even grind. Once you put peppercorns in it, it will activate to grind as soon as you turn it over. I haven't tried saline yet because I didn't know before I bought it that EVERY coffee grinder requires 6 AAA batteries and that would be my only negative thing to say about this product. I like the choice of fine tuning for the pepper. My current manual coffee grinder sometimes has oversized chunks of pepper in my potatoes, causing a bit of a sting when I bite into them. So it is very important to have a choice when hiring. I highly recommend this salt and pepper mill set. It's a great price, especially since you get a set for what you would have to pay for just such a great product. Remember, if you are giving a gift, buy 12 AAA batteries in advance so you can use them immediately. I think batteries should last a long time depending on how little they are used each time.
