Not as durable as expected

I don't usually write reviews but I've read enough about this project that I want to help others. I repainted an old bedroom set that used to be cream but is starting to turn yellow. I was arguing between using Rustoleum Furniture Transformations and Beyond Paint. I finally settled on Beyond Paint because it was marketed as a one step solution that didn't require multiple steps while the Rustoleum kit required multiple steps. Also, Rustoleum was a bit more expensive for my project as I needed 2 kits. I chose pewter as the color and I'm glad I did. The color is rich, bold, just what I was looking for. The paint is thick but applies well with a roller, doesn't go as smoothly with a brush, so the cracks were a problem. I was so pleased with the results until I put the gear back on. My nail literally brushed the surface of the paint and peeled it off to white! This was after letting it sit for over a week so the drying time should have been more than enough. I followed the directions to the letter including preparing the surfaces with the recommended Simple Green product. Obviously I needed this finish to be more durable and had no choice but to use a sealer/protective coat. Needless to say, this increased the cost, added more steps, and resulted in the finish being slightly glossy, which I didn't want (even with a matte sealer). The sealant also reinforced any imperfect brushstrokes. This project was just an old piece of furniture so I'm not too upset, but if it was a larger project with higher stakes like cabinets I would be upset. I don't think this product is as durable as it claims to be. If you are considering this product, be prepared that you may need a sealer or additional steps to make the end result more durable.

Pros
  • Paint and primer
Cons
  • Lots of stuff
