Review on WELLAX Ultralight Air Sleeping Pad: The Ultimate Inflatable Mattress For Backpacking, Traveling & Camping! by Tim Wilson

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Formerly "Not really a good buy ", updated to a GREAT BUY for the price!

*******UPDATE*******So, the very same day I posted my 2-star review for this sleeping pad a representative from WellaX (Anna) emailed me asking for more details. I explained that the pad was losing pressure and would substantially deflate within a couple of hours, even though the valves were properly closed and no leaks could be found. I told her my verdict: material too thin allowing air to diffuse through the wall, that is a design, not a construction problem. She was not convinced, and told me that their pads are tested and are supposed to remain firmly inflated for 8-10 hours, so she was going to send me a replacement (free of charge, and I get to keep the first one) because she was sure I got a bad one.So, I got the second one yesterday and she was right! I used it last night not very convinced that it would hold pressure under my 6 ft/240 lbs frame, but this morning the pad was still firm. I went to bed around midnight and woke up around 7am, so that is about seven hours. That is good enough for me.So, because of great customer service and the second pad actually performing as advertised, I am raising my review to 4 stars. I did not give them 5 stars because great customer service aside, I still got a bad one, so my experience was not perfect.*******END of UPDATE*******I paid about $40 for this pad, drawn by its "ultralight" and "virtually silent" claims.Well, it is very light! But, not really virtually silent. It is definitively quieter that most of the reflective foam pads out there, but it was still quite noisy. You can minimize the noise by "learning" how to move and adjust your position while sleeping, but mastering that skill will take some time. When fully inflated the pad is indeed very comfortable. I am 6-0 Ft tall, and a wide shouldered 240 pounds and I feel very comfortable on my back or even face down (if that is your thing). Sleeping sideways was a bit of a challenge, but no surprise there as the reduction in support area makes for increase pressure. Now, I said "when fully inflated" because this pad lost half of its support just a couple of hours into the night. I checked the valve (fully closed) and for leaks (none). My opinion is that the material just can't sustain the pressure under load and air simply diffuses through the walls. So, I will not be taking this camping ever. My recommendation to the manufacturer would be to use a better, thicker material (adding weight, I know, but, what's the point if it is not good for what it is designed to do?), maybe a sealing layer?I am not going to return it either, I am going to keep it in my office for any future afternoon naps.Bottom line, if you are looking for a comfortable sleeping pad for your "El Camino de Santiago" backpacking trip, DO NOT buy this pad. If you are looking for a comfortable pad for a one hour (maybe two hours) power nap, then this is good enough.
