When it comes to a simple and established tool like this, there aren't many differences from the competition, but I found one feature. EXTREMELY EASY TO READ - Laser etched into the high contrast anodized finish, the markings are well defined and sharply focused and I'm sure they will remain so for a very long time. You'll immediately understand why Empire calls them "HD". This is a huge improvement over traditional die-cut markings that are then painted over, or silk-screened markings on a painted surface, which are fuzzy and wear off quickly. It's weird how vision and memory work, but for some reason when I access one of those "HD" markers, look away to check the square or whatever, and then look back, my eye seems to return to the correct marker , where, as if through blurred stamped marks painted over, I search and repeat to make sure I'm right. This is similar to how your eye is drawn to the sharper long graduations at the 1/4 inch dots on a tape measure. Finally, while I'm sure it's not, it looks and feels like it's made from a single piece of aluminum, not stamped and welded pieces of sheet metal, for what it's worth.
