📏 Enhanced Definition 7 Inch Empire Level E2994 Review

What more can I say but very accurate. I am very happy with this Speed Square. I checked it against several other squares, accurate reading and accuracy. I saw it a few years ago and always wanted one for myself. In the end I bought it and I have no regrets.

Very well made speed angle. Did I say well done? It's good. I can't comment on the durability of the markings, but they seem permanent to me. The aluminum is only 3/16" thick, very solid. I love the idea that I can always download a book to my phone with a QR code and not lose it like the paper versions sent with some of the others will.

compared to another square for perpendicularity and I'm pretty sure this one is the culprit. But to be sure I need to buy a square now to make sure my squares are square. *sigh* It looks good and for normal work it does exactly what I need and doesn't really need to be perfect. You just need to have another name for "nearly perfect squares" for expectations to be set correctly.

I like this square very much. However, Empire needs to be able to handle notches like Swanson so I can easily mark quick breaks on the board. The edge perpendicular to the board is deeper than the Swanson and can be a curse or a blessing depending on the situation. Finally, aluminum feels soft. Mine already has a few chips/dents that my roommates Swanson seem to be missing. Maybe it's just bad luck?

I'm sure there are good rafter angles out there too, I don't know but it's a pleasure to use and does the job well. I've been using cheap versions of these types of squares for years and found them to be good enough. When I gave my son this square for Christmas, I changed my mind and bought it for myself. It seems that the quality of hand tools, even more so than power tools, changes self-esteem about the quality of your work.

This square is very accurate as tested with my Brown and Sharp machine square. It also reads very well with white writing on a blue laser. It has been CNC machined so the edges are pretty sharp. I felt a little uncomfortable holding it with my bare hands, so I chamfered the edges a bit with a Swiss file. This of course broke the blue anodized finish, leaving the edges with a shiny aluminum finish. It actually looks pretty good. But I want them to break the sharp edges before anodizing. This…

When it comes to a simple and established tool like this, there aren't many differences from the competition, but I found one feature. EXTREMELY EASY TO READ - Laser etched into the high contrast anodized finish, the markings are well defined and sharply focused and I'm sure they will remain so for a very long time.
