This filter was bought mainly for a UV sterilizer. Absolutely quiet and filters excellently. However, disassembling each compartment, cleaning it (washing the bioballs in aquarium water!) and reassembling it into the "cage" and re-inserting it into the filter became labor intensive. I realized it was just clever over-engineering and basically a gimmick. After all, its purpose is to pump water through a medium (mechanical, biological, etc.), and all of that is a falderol (the term fits). I threw all the compartments into a garbage can, spread out bioballoons on the floor, and filled the entire filter with fibrous filler. Dude, this pup spins water! Near the HOB external filter. Cleaning is virtually effortless - remove and replace fiberfill as needed, remove inlet tube and flush inlet guard if used, and reinstall. You don't even need to disable the filter. Release the "skimmer" as well. It sucks air and keeps you up at night. A skimmer is not required in freshwater aquariums, only in seawater aquariums. Would I buy more? Maybe because of the water flow and the sterilizer, but I'd still throw that junk away. Thank you for reading and now I will bring you back to our regular broadcast.
