the thing is a work of art. a faceted crystal top, a color-changing LED at the base that illuminates the water, and yes, it's a little confusing. One part says the lid should be tightly closed, and the label says the lid shouldn't be on. I went and screwed the lid on and everything was fine. Just don't fill it out completely. Leave some air, about 3/4 inch or so. You can see the gas coming out. Cool. Also the fact that it runs on batteries is amazing so it makes a great addition to my kitchen.
