Here's how it works: The multicolored lights in this CD player/radio seem to follow a random pattern to me, and it's the same pattern whether I'm listening to Lawrence Welk or Def Leppard. The light not only shines on the edges of the speakers, but "penetrates" the slightly translucent plastic housing, bypassing the shadows of tangled cables and other things inside. The speakers themselves are recessed into the cabinet behind metal grilles about 2 inches in diameter and appear to have some sort of diaphragm over the cones. The control buttons are oriented upwards, which suits me for use on the low shelf. Multifunction button instructions are confusing so I had to spend some time experimenting to figure them out. There is no tone control but there are five equalizer settings. The radio is tuned digitally. There are twenty station save slots if you figure out how to save them, but you can only scan them sequentially. No AM or Bluetooth band. The red LED lights up when the device is switched off; It's not radio tuning performance or a stereo display. When receiving a stereo signal, the LCD will alternately display "STβ and the frequency of the station. The CD door opens (without spring pressure) and offers some resistance when opening and closing. I haven't tested this with batteries, an aux input, or an MP3 USB drive. Headphones work well and appear neutral. I got this because my Jenson CD-560 didn't have a headphone jack and had to listen to CDs at night. Although the Jenson CD-560 has larger speakers, I like the sound quality of this Lauson Boombox better. The blinking lights aren't very bright, so they're easy to ignore.
