Revainrating 2 out of 5

Great product, but steep learning curve and cluttered user interface.

In terms of hardware and functionality, this is a very good product that appears to be reliable and of high quality. ****UPDATE: Everything here is from my original review and I stand by it. After studying a very long manual, I have already found out a lot. This is a very good GPS unit and I would highly recommend it and would buy it again. But I still keep this 4-star rating for the reasons mentioned. The manual is huge for a reason - the 550 can do a lot of different things, is versatile and of high quality. It also means that it takes a lot of words/images to explain everything and takes a lot of time to read and understand and I think a lot of these things can be simplified and/or consolidated in a logical way. [END OF UPDATE] **** HOWEVER, there is a steep learning curve to figuring out how to actually use it. The user interface has all the hallmarks of a product designed in Europe. Abstract symbols with no clear logical connection to basic functions and things that should be basic are executed in a few convoluted steps. For example, I gave 550 access to my contacts and created a few My Places. BUT when I try to create a route using the start and end point of the basic address/POI search field, the search does not overlap with entries in "My Places" or "Contacts". If you want to use a contact or My Place as part of a route instead, you must navigate to separate My Places or Contacts records to use as your origin/destination location. It's nice to have them as separate data locations, but this is a simple feature that allows search to sift through these datasets to determine route locations. Process by clicking on the interface. Another weird (if not annoying) thing is that when you create a route and select "My Places" as source for start/end locations, the search interface gives options in Dutch or German for hotels/racetracks/& other destinations , but I have NO European map installed, no device. I have no idea why I've ever seen options/locations in another language (again, I believe it's Dutch, but it might be German). The only language I have assigned is English and the only map I have set is US/Canada. When I try to delete those weird Dutch or German "My Places" the edit function in "My Places" is grayed out. What's even weirder is that these German destinations don't even show up in my list when I go into the My Places data itself (rather than during the route creation process), only the two I created. In other words, the 550 appears to be using two different data sources for My Places, one being My Places itself and the other being the My Places list that appears when you create a route. User interface. I'll find out all of this in time, but UI designers need a lesson in KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid.
