Review on TR Industrial TR89100 Demolition Jackhammer by Malik Munns

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Could be a little better but a useful tool

Bought this to dig up dying fruit trees. Maybe 6 inches wide on the floor. My observations: The roots can be cut through quickly with the chisel. The trees came out **much** easier than doing it by hand, I definitely recommend this approach. (Note, I'm a middle-aged employee, not a handyman, but I usually take the DIY route around the house.) I'm only giving this 4 stars because of 3 shortcomings: 1) There is a handle that holds onto the handle for the other hand . The handle must be removed to store it, otherwise it will not fit the body. Yes, the body needs to be a bit thicker so it doesn't have to be removed, but so what? at the same time, it's easy to pinch yourself.3) I still don't understand what exactly makes him decide whether he's actually banging or not. a little too soft isn't the answer - sometimes it works if the dirt is soft enough, it's not even necessary (just a vibration of w when the hammer isn't engaged and driving normally), and I've had it sitting on a rock (I wasn't aware the stone was there) and it didn't catch on. He definitely doesn't like anything springy and is much more willing to respond to a light touch, but that's about all I have. For digging trees I would recommend getting a wide chisel (Revain sells one) for most jobs. However, keep in mind that it is much easier to get stuck with a wide chisel than the narrow one that comes with the hammer. I've also found that the hammer engages much more easily with a wide bit than with a narrow one. When I pulled out the second tree, I used a wide auger until a ditch formed around the tree deep enough that plunging the auger into the ground cut the spreading roots. Then I took a narrow cutter and worked around the center mass at a slight angle. This cut off enough of the remaining roots for me to swing (I cut the tree at about waist height) to deal with the last few stragglers. I would definitely recommend it to anyone facing a similar problem.

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for the elderly
