It was designed to quickly transfer data between laptop drives without having to mess with tightly screwed-on case cards. This is the perfect tool to upgrade a computer with a single 2.5" drive bay to a 2.5" SSD. You can insert a new drive, install a new operating system, and then use the migration tools to copy everything you need over USB. While the connector also accepts 3.5" drives, this cable is designed for 2.5" drives as it does not include a power adapter for larger desktop drives, so be aware. For me, the purpose of this cable is to plug in the drive, transfer data via USB and move on, not use it as a cheap external enclosure. The silicone case is easy to fit and offers some protection, but like all silicone cases, it will pick up lint and dust over time. The included hard case is a bit cryptic. This is a plastic case and the SATA connector does not go through the open end. Maybe I'm using it wrong. I had no stability issues or data copy errors, and my drive only needed the main USB connector plugged in (the second branched connector is just for more power). Very satisfied, especially the cheap price.
