Carriage Bolts = Peace of Mind

I have some gnarled old drainpipes that have seen quite a bit of wind and abuse over the years. I kept them attached and out of the neighbor's yard with a single sheet metal screw through the top. It worked but was a bit painful to remove for mowing. So I decided to try these loops. Even with my somewhat crooked curves and spouts, there were no surprises during installation. Hinges are easy to install; I just had to bend the drain pipe back a bit to give it a sort of square shape. But I was concerned about how strong the hinge pins would be since they're just pressed against the aluminum. So I found some carriage bolts where the square on the bolts just fit in the middle hole. Adding the nuts to the extruded aluminum really strengthens the hinge. (Don't tighten it so much that the hinge can't move. And actually, the square on the screw helps prevent that.) Add some Loctite to the mix and you're done!
