After over a thousand capping sessions across multiple bottles in five years I can safely say that the flanges hold the vacuum much better than the smooth walled Vacu Vins and I always push the pump very aggressively on the top of the cork to get a smooth side cork to find a "house" and create a seal. This design works with multiple rows of flexible flanges. The smooth sides of the Vacu Vin don't work as well. So avoid the Vacu-Vin style if you expect the vacuum to last more than a few hours.
