I ran out of disk space on my M1 Mac mini and started using an external USB hard drive. Needless to say, experience has told me that you need an SSD. I wanted a true Thunderbolt solution instead of Thunderbolt 3 compatible USB-C. I've been using OWC products for years and have bought both the Envoy Express and an inexpensive 500GB M.2 WD Blue SSD. Installing a solid state drive in the case is not difficult. Within minutes I was able to initialize it and use it on a Mac. Because it's a bus-powered solution, I don't have to worry about another power cord. Another nice touch is the included mount. They advertise connecting to your laptop, but for me it's a clean install on a Mac mini. I attached the bracket to my Mini and the drive sits nice and securely there, but can be easily removed if I want to. They say the mount is easy to remove and reinstall, but I haven't had a chance to try that. Overall it was a bit more expensive than the USB-C solution, but it allows me to get the most out of any SSD I install now and in the future.
