Review on Cutting-Edge Garmin Edge 1000: Color Touchscreen GPS Revolutionizes Navigation by Erik Sanders

GPS for bikes and more

Received it and did a two day 180 mile one way bike ride the next day. I had a backup plan—a full-size, folded AAA roadmap. But the Edge 1000 was easy to use. The card is still neatly folded. I never needed it. Battery life was around 9 hours - not quite the advertised 13 or 14 hours, but I did have a spare battery that I use with my phone. When I got a low battery warning on the Edge, I put it in the spare tire and drove on. Edge routed me on good bike paths and a few trails - sent me the wrong way twice on short one-way streets, but so what? The display was easy to see, alerting you when corners were approaching and counting down the distance to the corner. Still learning all the features but this was easy to use right out of the box. I didn't waste time reading the instructions - I'll get to it eventually. I've only been looking for GPS features to guide me on trips and tours, I haven't really bothered with odometer features or cadence or anything like that, but it's all there and I'm starting to use it as well.
