Review on Watts 500800 Instant Recirculating Install by John Naidu

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Less water loss and hot water (almost) on demand.

Easy to install but the timer is a bit dated. When I tried to do my part during a drought, a friend recommended it. I was struggling to figure out how it could circulate water without a separate return line, but a close examination of the online manual revealed that it relies on a simple 'sensor' to pump water back through the cold water line to the hot water tank. It installed quickly, but I would make the following suggestions. Do not try to turn off the faucets under the sink when installing the sensor. If they're frozen in the on position like mine and you're asking for leaks to unscrew those knobs. Just turn off the water supply. Also, if you're hoping to minimize the time the pump is running until you need hot water, for example for a shower, the timer on the unit once installed is inconvenient and insufficient unless you're a habitual person who expects to shower at the same time every day (including weekends). I connected my pump to a Belkin Wemo programmable Wi-Fi outlet and can now program and/or turn it on using my phone and the touch switch built into the outlet. It also shows the power consumed by the pump. So far it looks like less than $0.50 per month. A small minus is about 5 seconds of warm water when cold water is turned on at the "Touch" sink. The main downside is that the pump, while almost silent, takes about 30 minutes to heat water through the return line, requiring us to know enough in advance when we'll need hot water. Also, in the no free lunch category, by saving water we don't use a portion on electricity for the pump ($0.50 per month?). . Do not use immediately. Still better than pouring cold water in the bath and flushing the toilet with a bucket while waiting for hot water for the shower!
