I had no problem separating both sides as other reviewers said and the magnet is quite strong but it doesn't clean the glass very well. It leaves tiny, streaky marks on the algae, so you'll have to go through each area a few times. A single-bladed scraper, which you can buy at the hardware store for a few bucks, will work much better, or even Mr Clean's magic eraser (make sure it's smooth, no soap or ammonia!). Hand off the blade, but there is NO blade. This would probably help. This would be best in a very large aquarium where it would be difficult to reach the bottom by simply sticking your hand in.
