Definitely not black in colour. In the second picture you can see the river layer in the aquarium next to it. I'm not too mad about it as it will be heavily planted, but I deducted a star anyway because the packaging clearly says 'black'. It also looked black in the bag. This is a 10 gallon aquarium and I used 1 bag on 2 small black sandbags which I bought very cheap at the pet store. I know how to fill the aquarium properly. I put a plastic bag on the substrate and filled it with the siphon that was in the perforated sample container, no problem. The water was slightly cloudy for about 30 minutes because I stirred it a little while it was full to release the bubbles. It also feels firm and not crumbly. I don't know yet what this will do to PH or plants as I'm still waiting for hardscape and plants to come out.
