I had an external drive that couldn't stay connected. I thought it was a USB controller and I could hack this case and put a drive in it. As soon as I opened the manufacturer's case, I found that the drive was too hot to hold! I thought maybe it was just overheating but when I used the original control board without the case it still shut down. When I put the drive in this case, I found an unformatted drive with no partitions. The original controller is encrypted or uses special formatting on disk. I had to back up all data with the original controller, then with a new enclosure, partition, format and rebuild the drive. A tedious pain for a 4 terabyte drive. But I chose to format with BTRFS, a new Linux format that has many advantages over EXT4 and NTFS. I also decided not to remove the top to keep the drive cool. Now the hard drive really works much faster, does not heat up and, most importantly, stays connected! I've seen this situation before with external drives. If I need an external drive in the future, I'll spend a few bucks more to buy an internal drive and enclosure. In the long run I will thank myself.
