Just right for hot flexible air conditioner accordion chimney

Bought this tape after researching online recommendations for insulating portable air conditioner exhaust hoses which can get very hot with these rather inefficient devices. In combination with the Reflectix Duct Wrap I wanted to reduce radiant heat so my air conditioner doesn't have to suck in warm air just to cool it down again. This combination of tape and shroud had two major disadvantages: 1. The shroud was so bulky that attaching it as instructed (overlapping so heat can't escape) turns the flexible duct into a kind of rigid mirror periscope that can't flex when the device is also moved just a few centimeters without detaching the duct attachment from the pipe. Hole in window adapter 2. Tape appeared to be of better quality. but the truth was not long in coming: just a few hours of use, and the adhesive on the tape softened and peeled off. It wasn't everywhere. Oddly enough, some of the coolest parts (as measured by an infrared gun) were the areas that let go the most. For example, if you are articulating a duct, moving the unit would separate the stiffer aluminum tape from the softer, smoother mylar bubble wrap of insulation. Finally. This combination of wrapping and tape will likely work wonders for steel duct and stationary applications. But it's certainly not for flexible channels, at least not for the components that come with my Arctic King 10000 BTU laptop. but I don't see anything different for competitive accordion channels.

Pros

Cons
  • Big and chunky
