Totally, totally unnecessary and not really following factory procedures for our 2000 VW Beetle 1.8T. The oil pan goes through the junction between the block and the bolted gearbox, meaning there's a connection there, meaning the gasket doesn't seal it. Proper RTV sealant is the go-to for sealing the oil pan, so skip that part. Yes, yes, yes, I'm also an old-school believer and thought that gaskets were better than sealant, but apparently times have changed and factories are using sealant to fill those complex joints.
