Our fireplace is almost always lit in the winter, but we bought these logs to increase the hygiene factor in our living room this spring and make our space that much cozier. When we unpacked the logs and placed them on the grate, they looked a bit dark in the firebox, but they were perfect with candles. Since our grate is built in, we needed a set of candles to fit over it. These resin logs fit the grate well, fill a standard chimney well and are light enough to be easily removed - perfect for those 'between' seasons when the weather can't make up its mind and we're still going back. and forward between heat and air conditioning to the south. We have used both real candles (tea candles and lanterns) and warm, shimmering LED wax lights for these logs. For everyday use we're leaning towards LEDs - it's amazing to be able to add that cozy factor with a quick button press on the remote (although I'm a big fan of real fire/flames!). Whether real or LED, votives help lighten the dark feel of logs a little more than tea lights, but both fit and work well. A great set for this price range. Please note: one of the candle holes is not smooth and the candles in this slot need to be positioned that way. Otherwise it's a great set that we're very happy with.
