I figured the only way to run 3 external monitors from my laptop was to buy more expensive models that can be daisy chained (each has a DP output port used to run another monitor can be used). But my dock has 2 DP connectors so one connects directly to the monitor and the other to this handy device. I now have 3 suitable external monitors and my laptop's flaps closed - exactly what I was aiming for. I can't boot my laptop (I have the original Surface Book with dock) AND 3 external displays at the same time, and when I try to extend the desktop only 2 displays work at first. But in the display settings I was able to select the laptop's built-in display and in the multiple display settings I could select "Turn off this display". I had to scroll down a bit to find it - it was originally set to "Extend the desktop to this display". But through trial and error I managed to get 3 external monitors to work.
