I have a 20 year old spiny softshell turtle. Aside from eating, his favorite pastime is digging and digging in the sand. Unfortunately, this has resulted in a new pump/filter having to be purchased about every 3 months as fine sand particles wear out the motor or impeller. I was willing to go for a bare-bottomed tank, but I felt it was cruel to deny instinctive behavior. So I thought to try this one. And it's wonderful! The granules are large enough not to affect the filter function, but small enough not to damage its delicate shell. Contrary to some reviewers, I had no problems with cloudy water. I used a fine mesh strainer to rinse out the sand for about 10 minutes. I didn't even need a brightener. Another plus, this substrate is much easier to vacuum.
