firstly, don't use this in a real car, it's NOT safe on the road, I use it for sim racing. Second, I'm not sure what material was used to grip the handlebars, but it's hard and smooth rubber plastic. You need a handlebar cover and/or gloves with a good grip on your palms, lots of sweat forces you to hold the handlebars very tightly otherwise your hands will slip off
