I have owned and used this for almost two years, I have a 'large' size. It works really well and fast to pump water out of my 55 gallon and 37 gallon freshwater aquariums. I have also used it in a 15 gallon aquarium. When the black rubber ball is quickly squeezed about 10 times, the water will start to flow from the tank into the bucket with very little effort. I have regular aquarium gravel that comes in a variety of colors and is sold everywhere. The large diameter tube cleans it out well when I stick it in the gravel and use the up and down strokes. A TON of dirt and debris I've never seen comes out every time I vacuum gravel. The gravel will not rise or exit the siphon on its own, it will only rise a maximum of 4-5 inches up the large pipe due to its weight and gravity. I use it for water changes rather than gravel cleaning. I've kept it outside on a rack for almost two years and the flexible plastic tube and large hard plastic "washer" have not cracked, discolored or damaged. I consider it high quality, it doesn't leak or break. The flexible pipe is very long, at least 6 feet, which is fine if you have the tank on a high stand and the bucket on the ground.
