It is great. but also kinda awful

I am both very satisfied and very disappointed with this mouse. It does a lot of things very well, but they're overshadowed by some really quirky design choices that make me wish I'd bought a cheaper, smarter mouse. Mouse with excellent tracking and long battery life, get this mouse. However, if you want an intuitive mouse that works without thinking, keep looking (and skip any Logitech mouse that offers "super-fast, incremental, precise scrolling by pressing the scroll wheel") ----- First , the good things: 1) Excellent battery life I've used this mouse daily for full 8 hour workdays for over two weeks and the Logitech Options software still claims the battery is "charged". 2) Excellent tracking. I haven't tested it on glass, but it runs great on any regular table. I don't think I've ever had a mouse this smooth. 3) very convenient. I'm prone to mild wrist pain with a lot of mice, but haven't had any issues with this one so far. It's big enough to use comfortably all day, yet compact enough to take with you when you travel. The forward/back buttons are on the side. The material of the mouse fits well in the hand and does not become slippery. and rough after a few hours of use. ----- So far so good. But there are a few things that really spoil me: 1) The scroll wheel design is just insane. Clicking the wheel instead of middle-clicking like almost every other mouse changes the scrolling mechanics. With a click, the wheel spins, as with most mice. On the other hand, the wheel can spin freely to effortlessly scroll through very long documents. What do I find a good feature? But why bind this function to the scroll wheel? How often do you have to change the way you scroll vs. middle click? While I knew this was the default behavior, what I didn't realize is that the scroll wheel button is the only button that CANNOT be customized. It performs this one function and that's it. Period. That's crazy for a mouse that's otherwise fully customizable and well-designed. 2) As a consequence of the first point, you need to install the Logitech Options software. This is technically optional; The mouse is more or less plug and play. In fact, however, you probably want to change some of the buttons. The scroll wheel can be tilted left or right, which means horizontal scrolling by default, but both can be set to middle-click, so with a little self-learning I can get normal middle-click functionality. 3) This mouse is LOUD. The buttons make very loud clicks, and when the scroll wheel snores, it's pretty loud too. Which again is a very strange choice. This mouse is designed to be used anywhere, even in a quiet conference room where someone is giving a presentation. I end up using my laptop's touchpad in these situations, even though it's less convenient, simply because I feel like I'm drawing attention otherwise. I'm not saying a mouse should be completely silent, but many super cheap mice are much quieter than this. I hope she softens with age and settles down a bit. ----- Ultimately, I won't be returning the mouse, so I guess the good points outweigh the bad ones. But I'm still very disappointed in Logitech.
