It's fine and yes you can replace the batteries
that worked as it should. While there's no easy latch to open and remove the batteries, you can simply unscrew the two mini-screws and separate the top and bottom. There are many batteries. LOL One big CR battery and 3 small round batteries. I replaced the large round CR battery and the device started working immediately.
